Graduating from Aberdeen High School in 1971, Eddie enrolled at GHC to play basketball and baseball for Coach Bob Basich. On the basketball court, he averaged 18 points per game and led the Chokers to sixth place in the NWAACC tournament, the team's first tournament ranking, where he averaged 24.6 points per game. He ended the season as team MVP, All-NWAACC First Team, and MVP of the Coastal Division. Eddie also excelled on the baseball field as starting shortstop for the Chokers and was named to the All-League First team, posting a .370 batting average. Transferring to Gonzaga University in 1973, his basketball career was cut short by injuries, but he posted a .301 batting average on the 1974 baseball team that earned a NCAA regional berth. For both years at Gonzaga, he earned the Mike Lollis Award for highest grade-point average on the baseball team and was named Big Sky Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year in 1975.
