Gary was a star sprinter and jumper at Aberdeen High School, along with being an All- Conference running back. He came to GHC in 1964 to compete on the football team. He scored 12 touchdowns, with more than half being over 60 yards. Gary was named by the Los Angeles Times as a Junior College All-American. Many Chokers historians believe that Gary was the fastest athlete to ever compete for the college, clocking 9.6 in the 100 yard dash. He provided many exciting moments for football fans during the season.

Gary went on to play wingback at Memphis State University for two years before a knee injury ended his playing career. Gary was inducted into the Aberdeen High School Hall of Fame in 1998
