GHC Tied for 3rd in West - Playoff Hopes Alive

2/20/2020 2:03:00 PM

In a game that highlights a season style of play, the GHC men's basketball team pulled off the improbable. Last Saturday's loss to LCC (1st place), by 40 points, was the low point of the Chokers season. Well, to call last night the high point may not be far fetched. The men in blue started quickly pounding the ball inside to Zyare Ruffin and Zach Marrotte. Timely shooting by Tristan Schoepf had the GHC faithful cheering loud. The Centralia College gymnasium had a great turnout, but that didn't stop the Chokers from shooting 50% from the field, 43% from the arc and 100% from the line, in the first half.

The Chokers would lead by as many as 13, but Centralia would never go away. The Chokers trailed by 6 in the final four minutes, but managed to reestablish their inside out attack. Matthew Pearson, Zyare Ruffin and Tristan Schoepf would all hit big shots to eventually overtake Centralia's lead. Gee Powell had 14 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 block shots for the GHC men. Tristan Schoepf led all scorers with 16 points and added 7 rebounds. The Grays Harbor College men finally pulled out the victory 62 - 58.

"These guys are something else. If you count them out - they come back. If they ever focus for 40 minutes we will be a very, very , very good team. I am so happy for them. They have put in the time, the work and to see them bounce back tonight was very rewarding. Zach Marrotte can do it all. Genuwine Powell is relentless. I think they set that tone that we are not done. We are going to try and stay in this race. This was a great team win.", said Head Coach Matthew Vargas.

The Chokers last home game is next Wednesday, the 26th, of February. The Chokers are currently tied for 3rd, in the NWAC West Region, looking to earn a birth in the NWAC Championship Tournament.
