Kevin Pine to Lead Choker Men’s Program for 2020-21 Season

6/4/2020 1:10:00 PM

Aberdeen – Grays Harbor Athletic Director Will Rider has recently announced that Kevin Pine, who just completed his first season as the head women's coach for the Chokers will also take the reins as the head men's coach for the 2020-21 season.  Rider stated, "We are really excited to have Kevin take-on this new challenge of leading both our men's and women's wrestling programs.  He did an outstanding job with our women's team and his continual interaction with our men will make this a smooth and easy transition."

Kevin will step in after his brother, Phillip, stepped down at the conclusion of this last season.  Phillip Pine was the person responsible for getting the program reinstated five years ago after the program was dropped in 1986.  The Choker men's wrestlers have had a winning dual meet record every year under his leadership, and have compiled an overall record of 51-31, having won the Northwest Conference Championships five straight years.  The Chokers just wrapped-up their strongest season yet by placing second at the National Championships.

Kevin Pine led the GHC women's team to the first ever Women's Northwest Conference Championship and a third place finish at the NCWA National Championships.  The team had a total of nine All American wrestlers this season with two individual national champions.

"I am looking forward to the challenge of running both programs this next season.  I will have big shoes to fill to keep up the consistency of success on the men's side.  We also have a great group of wrestlers returning on both the men and women's teams for next season, which will make for a smoother transition," Pine said.

Pine has had success at the collegiate level where he coached Central Washington University from 1994-2001. The Wildcats had 20 All American wresters at the NAIA and the NCAA II level during that period as well as having two All American Academic teams. Pine was an All American wrestler at CWU and was a 4x Canadian national placer and Greco Roman national champion while attending Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada.

Pine also practices what he preaches for he still competes at a national and international level. He has won 18 Freestyle and Greco Roman Masters National Championships and is a 7x World medalist earning a Freestyle World Championship in 2018 that was held in Skopje, Macedonia.
