Aberdeen, WA - Three of the top four pre-season ranked teams met at Grays Harbor College this past weekend. The Chokers #1 had duals with #3 Big Bend and #4 Umpqua. It was a tough day for the Chokers , dropping both duals. Umpqua dominated the day by going 2-0 and Big Bend went 1-1. In the first dual Umpqua defeated Big Bend 30-19.
The Chokers then took the mat vs Umpqua. It was a tough dual and the home team came away with just three victories.
Tatum Pine (130) scored a fall at 1:28 in the first after a couple of snap down takedowns. She picked up the fall with a heavy cross face turk.
Kamila Montenegro (170) hit a great counter off her opponents double leg attempt and pancaked her to her back, scoring a fall at 5:31.
Quinn Lacy (191+) also had a great match. Quinn controlled the center of the mat and scored three consecutive push outs. This frustrated her opponent to make a bad shot which Quinn capitalized on. She then scored three quick turns to earn an 11-0 tech fall. The final score was 38-15 for Umpqua.
"We had a chance to be in the dual for we scored first in all but one of the matches contested. We have to chalk it up as an opportunity to make adjustments and get ready for the next competition" said Coach
Jim Thrall.
The following dual vs Big Bend had a slew of forfeits due both teams being short handed.
Sila Fotu (190) won 11-0. She scored an early takedown and then hit two quick gut wrenches to go up 6-0. Following a one point push out Sila was able to score another two takedowns to get the tech fall. "It was a tough day, we need to be able to finish matches when get someone on their back and we didn't do that today. It was not our day today. We will be better next time," said Coach
Kateri Rowell after the duals. Final score 28-16 for Big Bend.
The rankings will surely be realigned but the Chokers are looking forward to the next events coming their way. The team travels to Ft Worth, TX this weekend for the Last Chance Olympic Qualifier.
