Leo Gayle "Bud" Hake was born July 11, 1927, and graduated from Ellensburg High School in 1945. He served in the Navy from 1945-1946 and entered Central Washington University that same year, graduating with a BA in education and eventually earning his masters degree in guidance counseling. Coach Hake started all four years at Central as a tackle, and was named All-Conference, Little All-Coast Selection Honors, plus the Captain's and Blocking Awards. He coached the GHC team from 1967-1976, posting a record of 65-30-1 in that 10 year span. During that time, the Chokers won the 1969 Northwest Community College Championship, beating Spokane with three goal line stands at Olympic Stadium. They also played in several more title games and won or shared five Western Division titles.
